Also, if what you're trying to do is retrieve the ackList metadata for the message, the recommended way to do it is to call

metaDataSuite.utils.qry_peekMetaValue(msgNum,"ackList")

Use metaDataSuite.utils.act_pokeMetaValue to set metadata for a message.
