funky member signup form

Greetings, and apologies for the cross-posting!
We recently moved our Manila installation from OS X to Windows:
http://manila.cet.middlebury.edu
Since then, we've encountered a problem with the members signup page. The
page now asks for a new member's password (and repeat) twice:
http://manila.cet.middlebury.edu/member/signup
New members are able to join the site. However, the next time they try to
log on to the site, they are unable to do so - they get a password error.
When the member asks for their password to be emailed to them, they get
this, for example: {"caitie19", ""} The member signed up with a password of
caitie19. Also, the same error occurs whether or not the member fills in
both instances of password and repeat.
It appears as though there's something wrong with the macro that renders the
signup page. I haven't been able to find a place to change this, though: I
got as far as manilaSuite.memebers.signUpPage, but can't figure out where
the actual password information is rendered and stored.
Two more notes: we are sharing membership between sites, and we were able to
get new members added and logged in from the Admin page of a weblog. That's
our hack for the moment, but as we're trying to get lots of new students
added to their class weblogs, it's highly inefficient.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks,
