It also occurs to me that instead of a traditional reverse proxy, you could do something more elaborate. For example,

instead of this...
Internet <---- Proxy <---- Manila Server

you could do this...
 +-- Manila Server 1
 |
Internet <---- Proxy <--+-- Manila Server 2
 |
 +-- Manila Server 3

This approach would involve significant configuration and testing because the proxy would have to know which sites reside on which Manila server, but it should work as a "do it yourself cluster".
